Storybook Sculpture exists to inspire joy and wonder.

About Brittany Sawrey

Ever since I was little, I have loved stories. I consumed as many as I could get my hands on, gleaning from them important soul truths that spoke to my young heart. I would often get complaints from teachers in elementary school about me sneaking books to read under my desk instead of paying attention. I wanted to be inside of the stories, inhabit them, walk alongside my heroes and heroines. I deeply understood G.K. Chesterton’s quote, “Fairytales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons are real, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

I started Storybook Sculpture in 2016. It began, as most good fairytales do, with a baby. Dear friends of mine were having a little girl, and I wanted to give her something particularly special, creative, and unique—the kind of thing a Fairy Godmother might give her. I discovered, and rapidly fell in love with, book sculpting. Hers was the first I ever made, and I felt like I had finally stumbled upon something I’d been weaving toward my whole life: an art medium where I really felt like I could inhabit the stories I loved, and not only be a part of their journeys but immortalize them for others to celebrate and enjoy. I truly believe that each of us are living our own incredible, one-of-a-kind story, and I love that through these sculptures I get to be a part of other people's stories. If you are looking for a unique gift, I would love to dream with you about what to create.

I'm honored by the recognition I've received for my work! I won "Best Sculpture" for Tempe Festival of the Arts in 2019, was named "Artist of the Month" by Phoenix Magazine in 2018, and received third place overall at Phoenix Festival for the Arts in 2017. This year, Disney+ purchased one of my Cinderella pieces to feature in their upcoming movie, "Godmothered", starring Isla Fisher and Jillian Bell.
